The importance of balance

My main takeaway from the readings and discussions that have been part of this unit have been that balance is a key important element of workplace wellness and success. Unpredictable work schedules and workloads can have a trickle down negative impact on work and home life if it continues for long periods without being adequately addressed. I find as a manager, it can be somewhat easier to look out for the wellbeing of employees in terms of encouraging them to take time off if not feeling well, taking regular breaks and encouraging social interaction etc than it can be for yourself, as ultimately you carry responsibility for the team’s performance and output. It can also be sometimes too easy to not take breaks or lunch etc when working to meet a deadline. I have recently began putting reminders in my calendar to take breaks and am doing my best to take them, because it really does improve performance, as well as relieving some pressure. And in working long hours, sitting can be hard on the body and cause strain so I have a standing desk and a balance board which I use frequently as I find it helps with breathing and concentration. So I am quite literally focusing on balance in both work and body at the same time.
