The Importance of Communication and Buy-In for PHS Success
Looking back, one of the key takeaways from this unit is how crucial communication and buy-in are before moving forward with any changes related to Psychological Health and Safety (PHS) in the workplace. While I thought I had support from leadership, I now realize that we haven't quite reached the level of full buy-in required for successful integration. To address this, I plan to revisit leadership engagement by organizing dedicated training and discussions with key stakeholders to align on priorities.
I also had a situation recently where PHS language was introduced in decision-making discussions, and it unintentionally led to confusion and a sense of distrust among staff. The language wasn't fully understood by everyone, and without clear context, it caused skepticism around the motivations for certain decisions. This highlighted the need for a baseline of shared language and understanding across all staff members before incorporating PHS principles into organizational decisions.
Before embedding PHS language into organizational decision-making, I will work to establish this shared baseline of understanding. I’ll begin by focusing on training that addresses the foundational aspects of PHS and provides clarity around how these principles align with organizational goals and performance.
What stood out the most was the focus on leadership’s role in supporting and championing these initiatives. It's clear that leadership’s involvement cannot just be assumed, and proactive efforts are needed to ensure everyone is aligned. This knowledge will change how I approach leadership engagement in the future, ensuring it's a more active and ongoing process, rather than a one-time effort. I plan to be more deliberate and strategic about making PHS a key element of our leadership development.

Thank you for this reflection Stasia. I loved how you talk about common language. So important. Especially with PHS where there's so many different words used, and in PHS can be defined differently. Looks like you have a plan going forward. Looking forward to hearing how it goes.
