The Bridge Between Well-Being, Productivity, and Performance

The staggering statistics of our Canadian workforce in relation to burnout and mental illness is what stood out the most for me in this module and how we need to combine holistic well-being, action-oriented strategies and a structured model to create a comprehensive approach to building healthy, high performing work cultures. I came across a study conducted in April 2023 by the BCG that stated “Canadians are burning out at work, and the unchecked stress is contributing to a national mental health epidemic which costs the country more than $200B annually.”  How can we expect high performing healthy workplaces when our country is facing such alarming rates of burnout and mental health crisis? Although we learned of many factors contributing to workplace performance, there are 3 factors that really stand out for me and need to be looked at critically when we’re speaking about workplace health and performance.

  1. Well-being & productivity – Countless studies have consistently shown that employees who are healthy and supported in their mental and physical well-being are more productive. Implementing flexible work schedules and mindfulness breaks allow employees to manage their energy and focus better, reducing absenteeism is an example of how employers are beginning to offer their workforce more flexibility in their working hours.

  2. Organizational Performance - Organizations that prioritize employee well-being see better retention rates, reduced burnout, and increased employee engagement

  3. National Prosperity - A healthy workforce contributes to national economic growth. Wellness Works Canada's approach highlights that companies investing in employee well-being not only enhance individual performance but also contribute to broader societal benefits such as reduced healthcare costs and a more resilient economy

Implementing & integrating these philosophies and frameworks involves much more than following a guide or standard and there is no ‘one-size-fits-all’.  Needs Assessments, leadership buy-in and training on the importance of well-being, and creating a purpose-driven culture are all key philosophies along with employee engagement and involvement throughout the process. Resources & well being programs need to be evaluated for their effectiveness while ensuring the financial costs & impacts make sense for the organization. This integration fosters employee well-being, boosts productivity, enhances organizational performance and national prosperity.
