Root Causes, Buy-Ins, Strategy Maps: Assessing the Current State - A Critical Reflection

Definitely in this unit, I saw that getting to the root cause of issues is important to ensure band-aid solutions are avoided and long-term strategy can be implemented. One thing I have seen first hand is symptom-solutions, such as giving teams time off after a particularly stressful project. This may be a beneficial action to a degree, however if the root cause of the stress (ex. poor workload management caused by the fundamental organizational structure) is not addressed, then it will occur again and again.

Another major takeaway for me was the importance of getting stakeholder buy-in strategically. Arming oneself with as much data as possible, and being ready to explain the connections between specific wellbeing factors and overall business benefits is important, especially when different stakeholder values and priorities are considered.

I will say that personally I am unlikely to use a Strategy Map to communicate information and plans to Stakeholders. I have ADHD which is perhaps why I have such great difficulties processing information that is presented this way (it’s more like a flashy keyword display than a map to my brain). Even after googling other examples, parsing any useful meaning was a challenge. Ultimately, I think this does speak to the value of ensuring you have different communication directives, especially when considering neurodivergencies on your team!

Great points Marg. Regarding the strategy map - I 100% agree - finding what speaks to the people you are communicating to, is key. The actual scorecard might be a better fit - OR, just finding the top 2-3 outcomes and accompanying measures can make it a bit easier to consume!
