The importance of flexibility

I think my biggest takeaway from this unit is the importance of flexibility in planning. Although it’s good to plan goals, objectives and strategies, it’s equally important to recognize that they may need to shift in response to internal and external pressures.

For me, flexibility is the easy part – I’ve always been a “fly by the seat of my pants” kind of planner, so thinking on the fly and reacting to new information is almost second nature. What will take some getting used to is starting with a plan and then finding ways to adjust that plan that will work for all stakeholders. It’s also good to remind myself that most people don’t like change, so being able to pull data and information to validate the reason for a change in course is important for keeping stakeholders informed and committed to the (now altered) plan.

This unit was a good reminder of the need to be flexible with plans. I am not so much a "fly by the seat of my pants" planner, so this will take some work on my part for adjustments!
