PsyCap as a Strong Immune System - Navigating Change and Disruption Reflection
My major takeaway while reflecting on this unit is how impressively substantial upheaval and change can be weathered when an organization is already in a healthy position when it comes to employee well-being and trust. It makes sense: when we have a reserve of positivity, for example, we are able to bounce back from negative experiences more gracefully. To use an analogy (I love analogies!) when one’s overall immune system is strong, it doesn’t mean they won’t ever get sick, but the chances of a quick recovery when they do are higher! The same goes for organizations with bolstered psychological capital: unpredictable shifts may happen and they may have difficult roads to cross, but the teams are more resilient.
One thing I’d like to note of course is that to me anyway, the conversation about PsyCap feels very high level. As it should be, since we are talking about overall team resiliency and adaptability. Within the organizations we work with however, there are specific individuals with varying needs, lives, levels of stress, and reserves. That’s why I think it is important to be mindful of the singular/individual impact that major change may have, and plan communication and resources accordingly. Essentially, set the team up to be as prepared as possible to handle change and challenges, and then monitor closely with resources in hand. And as always, the more collaboration and connection the employees have with a change, and the more control they have over a situation (or response to a situation) the better!
